LEAP Staff Recognized for Dedication to Advancing The Economic Development Profession

The Michigan Economic Developers Association (MEDA) held its Annual Conference last week. The theme of this year’s meeting was “CONNECT: People. Ideas. Solutions.” which let economic developers know the connections that are needed to succeed with emerging industries, themes, and tools.

At the conference MEDA hosted a New Member and Awards Reception where four statewide awards were presented to outstanding economic developers, including the Mike Conboy Professional Development and President’s Awards. The Conboy Award is given to one MEDA member who has made substantial, long-term contributions/commitment to MEDA, specifically focusing on the advancement of the economic development profession through support of education and training, and by expanding the knowledge base of economic developers. The President’s Award is given to members that have provided a substantial contribution to the organization and its statewide economic development efforts.

Grand Ledge Twins Continue to Succeed in Highly Competitive Fashion Industry

LANSING, MI – The Lansing Economic Area Partnership (LEAP) and The Runway are excited to support two hometown designers as they compete on the Emmy Award winning, fashion reality show, Project Runway produced by Lifetime Network.

Grand Ledge twins Claire and Shawn Buitendorp were first introduced to The Runway as students in the Lansing Community College (LCC) Fashion Technology Program. The Buitendorps graduated from LCC in 2011, and are no strangers to success on a national stage. The twins have dressed singer Katy Perry more than 25 times, and recently competed and won the VH1 hit reality show Twinning.

LANSING, MI – Wednesday morning July 26th, Mayor Virg Bernero and the Lansing Economic Area Partnership (LEAP) announced the redevelopment of two adjacent properties located at 1101 and 1103 South Washington Avenue in REO Town. Through the renovation of the two properties, the existing structures will be transformed into vibrant new mixed-use spaces in Lansing’s REO Town district.

“Redevelopment of existing buildings is booming all over the city, helping us keep and create quality jobs in Lansing and providing a venue for terrific new businesses led by talented entrepreneurs," said Mayor Bernero. "Leveraging our existing assets and strong collaborative partnerships are key to the city’s long-term competitiveness, and these redevelopment projects are great examples of both.”

LANSING, MI – The Lansing Economic Area Partnership (LEAP) is excited to announce the winner of the local InnovateHER business pitch competition, TheraB Medical. LEAP partnered with the Lansing area Tech Thursday networking group to host a local event in conjunction with the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA)'s InnovateHER Challenge. The event, held yesterday evening at the EAST Lansing Technology and Innovation Center (TIC), was the third local InnovateHER Challenge competition LEAP has spearheaded in the region, in as many years.

The InnovateHER Innovating for Women Business Challenge is targeted at local entrepreneurs and innovators whose products and services better the lives of women and families. Winners of local InnovateHER competitions are eligible to enter a nationwide business competition that brings top local winners from across the nation together.

Escapade VR the Newest Business to be “Hatched” Through LEAP

LANSING, MI – The Lansing Economic Area Partnership (LEAP) is excited to announce the winner of the May Hatching event, Andrez Chuney with his idea Escapade VR. Escapade VR is an app that allows students to job shadow and experience different career paths in virtual reality to find their ideal careers. Chuney joins 54 winners and 388 ideas submitted throughout the history of The Hatching.

Celebrating its fourth anniversary this June, LEAP’s Hatching is part of a community-wide effort to support local entrepreneurs and make the Lansing region a great place to start a business. Each month, participants submit business and product ideas through The Hatching’s online portal, where the public subsequently votes forward up to five top ideas. The owners of the top five ideas then have a chance to pitch in front of a live audience and panel of judges.
