Inflation Accelerated From August

  • There were modest increases in nominal household income and consumer spending in August. 
  • Overall inflation slowed in August but remains much higher than the Federal Reserve would like. 
  • Inflation-adjusted after-tax income and consumer spending both rose in August. 
  • Consumer spending continues to raise, but the drivers are turning less positive. 
  • The Fed will continue to raise interest rates in the near term to slow inflation. 
  • The most likely outcome is modest economic growth in 2023, but recession risks are elevated.

PNC Chief Economist Gus Faucher: GDP Revisions Indicate Weaker Economy in First Half of 2022

Than Initially Reported

  • The contraction in real GDP in the first half of 2022 was unrevised with the release of the annual revisions. But growth in real domestic income was revised much lower in the first half of the year, although it still increased in both the first and second quarters. 
  • With the revisions to real GDP the contraction in real GDP was slightly smaller than initially reported, and the recovery through 2021 was slightly stronger. 
  • Recession risks are elevated with the Federal Reserve aggressively raising interest rates in 2022.

Michiganders do not have to pay state or federal taxes on federal loan forgiveness; approximately 1.4 million Michiganders have student loans    

LANSING, Mich. – Today, Governor Gretchen Whitmer announced that student loan relief  would not be treated as taxable income in Michigan. Approximately 1.4 million Michiganders eligible for relief will not owe any state taxes for receiving benefits of the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program or other student loan forgiveness.
