Additive manufacturing or 3D printing is not a new technology. Additive manufacturing first emerged in 1987 with stereolithography (SL), a process that solidifies thin layers of ultraviolet (UV) light‐sensitive liquid polymer using a laser. The risks include loss of personal property without adequate coverage, liability and identity theft.

Automated Is Not Autonomous | Huei Peng

The Michigan Business Network recently held its Mobility Luncheon where Director of Mcity, Huei Peng Ph.D gave a keynote speech on the current status of the mobility industry.

There is talk of the autonomous vehicle being on the verge of populating our streets. However, Huei Peng Ph.D begins with the forward statement, “automated is not autonomous.” During his keynote speech he describes five (0-5) levels of automation and most automated vehicles have barely entered into the first level (see slide 2). Huei continues with the multiple challenges that need to be addressed before truly arriving at a safe and reliable point for these vehicles to drive on public roads. This includes testing the vehicles in a controlled environment where they can be be carefully monitored.

Steve Purdy and A.J. Baime provide an update on the Automotive Heritage Awards we talked about on our last program. They presented a series of awards for journalism, special automobiles and one for lifetime achievement at the Concours d’Elegance of America at St. Johns. GM executive vice president, Mark Reuss, was there to accept the Future Collectible Vehicle of the Year award from the National Automotive History Collection and the Mercedes Maybach Cabriolet won the Concept Vehicle of the Year honor. Most important is the AHA Lifetime Achievement Award that went to veteran columnist for Road & Track and Cycle World magazines, Peter Egan.

The event is being hosted by Plug and Play – the world’s largest global innovation platform – in partnership with PlanetM and the Michigan Economic Development Corporation. Detroit was a natural choice for an event, given the city’s reputation as a leader in transportation innovation.
