Winners direct additional $1,000 to charities; application deadline April 30

LANSING, Mich. — LAFCU is accepting applications for its 2018 Write to Educate Essay Contest that offers two $2,500 college scholarships to high school seniors and allows them each to select a charity to receive a $500 donation from LAFCU. The Lansing State Journal is the community sponsor of the contest.

The entry deadline is April 30. The scholarships can be used at Lansing Community College or Baker College’s Owosso campus. Applications are available online at www.lafcu.com/lafcumyway.

“This scholarship program demonstrates the power of communication and of giving back,” said Kelli A. Ellsworth Etchison, LAFCU senior vice president of marketing. “We’re hoping to influence our next generation of leaders to consider how they can adopt a community-minded vision and help strengthen the world around them.”

Winners will be chosen based on their one-page essay in response to the questions: Why is the credit union philosophy of “People helping people” important? How can you embody this principle in your community, on your college campus or through volunteerism?”

The winning essays will be published in the Lansing State Journal.

Each winner will select a charity to receive a $500 donation from LAFCU. The options are:

  • Big Brothers Big Sisters Michigan Capital Region
  • Building Twentyone
  • Shiawassee Community Foundation Youth Advisory Council

Applicants do not need to be members of LAFCU, but they must attend high school in LAFCU’s service territory, which is the counties of Barry, Calhoun, Clinton, Eaton, Gratiot, Ingham, Ionia, Jackson, Livingston, Montcalm and Shiawassee.

Entries may be uploaded via www.lafcu.com/lafcumyway or mailed to LAFCU. For more information, visit www.lafcu.com/lafcumyway.
