Shred-It to Provide On-Site Document Shredding at BBB Event

Southfield, MI – May 18, 2018  Better Business Bureau (BBB) Serving Detroit & Eastern Michigan is once again partnering with Shred-It and Fox 2 News to host ‘Secure Your ID’ Day on Saturday, May 19, 2018. The event will be hosted at Southfield High School; open from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. All cars must be in line by 12:30. There will be no electronic recycling at this event.

According to the Federal Trade Commission’s 2017 Consumer Sentinel Network Data Book, Michigan ranked No. 5 in the nation for the number of fraud complaints and No. 1 in reports of identity theft. Identity theft can be committed in many ways such as Government Documents or Benefits Fraud, which topped the list at 27 percent of the reports. It can also be perpetrated through credit card fraud (22%), phone or utilities fraud (13%), and bank fraud (8%), according to the FTC.

“Over half of identity theft victims are able to trace the theft back to something that was stolen from their own possession,” said Melanie Duquesnel, President and CEO of BBB Serving Eastern Michigan. “We host this event twice a year in hopes of preventing someone else from becoming a victim of identity theft.”

Document shredding is one of the most effective ways to dispose of sensitive records, data, documents and information that could be the target of identity thieves. However, it is important to know how long to keep certain documents, so prior to attending the event or shredding at home, consumers should consult this records retention schedule for more information.
