guy-933318_640.jpgFormer Secretary of State Hillary Clinton had an awkward moment on the campaign trail when she tried unsuccessfully to swipe her metro card onto the New York City subway multiple times — a common experience for almost anyone who has taken public transportation in the city. Commuters are close to never having that experience again. Cities including London, Chicago, Singapore, New York and Dubai are making it possible for travelers to use just their smartphones, credit cards, debit cards and pre-paid bank cards to pay for public transportation, eliminating the need for separate public-transportation cards and any kind of swiping at all.
