TechnologyWe were warned about the security risks of the internet -- but we weren’t paying attention. In May 1998, a group of hackers called L0pht testified before a Senate panel on the massive security loopholes that were built into the nascent Internet.

The companies supplying the hardware and software were unaware of or uninterested in building robust security into their products. As a result, malicious hackers have consistently been able to cause damage and steal data over the years, no matter how frequently Internet hardware and software is updated.
