As FEMA continues to work to provide assistance to those affected by the storms that rolled through our state last August, Congresswoman Slotkin wanted to provide additional updates for those affected by the severe storms, tornadoes, and flooding.

As a reminder, the FEMA declaration covers Eaton, Ingham, Livingston, and Oakland counties in the 7th District. And if you have family or friends in Wayne, Ionia, Kent, Macomb, or Monroe counties who were affected by those storms, this information applies to them as well. If you have not already done so, you can start the application process either by logging on to FEMA’s website, downloading the FEMA app, or calling the FEMA Helpline at (800) 621-3362. You can continue to find up-to-date information on disaster relief in Michigan and additional assistance HERE. Please note that the deadline to apply for assistance is Monday, April 8, 2024. The Internal Revenue Services (IRS) has announced tax relief for individuals and businesses in the affected counties. As a result, affected individuals and businesses will have until June 17, 2024 to file returns and pay any taxes that were originally due during this period. Among other things, this means the June 17, 2024 deadline will now apply to individual income tax returns and payments normally due April 15, 2024. You can find out more about tax relief HERE or by visiting the IRS's disaster assistance website.

FEMA assistance may also be available to renters that suffered uninsured or under insured losses in affected counties. Renters may also qualify for a grant to assist with uninsured essential property losses and other disaster-related expenses. These expenses may include the replacement or repair of necessary personal property, such as furniture, appliances, or clothing. You can find more information about assistance for renters HERE.If you apply for FEMA assistance, you may be referred to the U.S. Small Business Administration. SBA programs can help homeowners and renters, not just businesses and non-profits. You can find out more about SBA assistance HERE.

We hope that you can take advantage of some of these federal resources to assist you in recovering from last summer’s storms, providing you with relief and peace of mind as we rebuild.

- Office of Rep. Elissa Slotkin
