Taxpayers Encouraged to Use eServices toCheck Refund Status, Ask Questions

LANSING, Mich. – The Michigan Department of Treasury reminds taxpayers that state of Michigan offices will be closed in observance of Presidents Day on Monday, Feb. 21.

Taxpayers with questions about their state individual income taxes before, during and after Presidents Day are encouraged to use Treasury eServices. The Michigan Department of Treasury portal enables taxpayers to ask state individual income tax-related questions when convenient and avoids waiting for a customer service representative to answer your call.

Real-time tax refund status information is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

“We tend to see an increase of state income tax return filings around Presidents Day weekend,” said Deputy State Treasurer Glenn White, who oversees Treasury’s Revenue Services programs. “To beat the phone surge right before and after this weekend, we ask that taxpayers use Treasury eServices for inquiries. eServices will allow taxpayers to view tax history, submit documentation and submit inquiries 24 hours a day, seven days a week.”

Treasury Self-Service enables taxpayers to check the status of tax refunds, ask general and specific questions, change addresses and see the status of letters sent to the state Treasury Department.

To ensure taxpayer privacy and security, the following information is required when using Treasury eServices:

  • Primary Filer’s Social Security Number (SSN)
  • Primary Filer’s Last Name
  • Tax Year
  • Filing Status
  • Adjusted Gross Income or Total Household Resources

Individuals can find their Adjusted Gross Income on line 10 of the MI-1040. Total Household Resources are found on line 33 on the MI-1040CR or line 37 on the MI-1040CR-7.

To get started with Treasury Self-Service, go to www.michigan.gov/incometax and click on “Where’s My Refund?”.

Unemployment Offices closed for Presidents Day

The Unemployment Insurance Agency (UIA) will be closed Monday, Feb. 21, in observance of Presidents Day.

Unemployed workers can still certify for benefits on Monday using the Michigan Web Account Manager (MiWAM). Certification by phone will not be available as state offices will be closed.

UIA anticipates a high volume of calls on Tuesday, Feb. 22, after the holiday and urges callers to be patient. In the case of extended hold times, you can save your spot in the caller queue by choosing the call-back option. Claimants can also use one of the other options for reaching the agency: scheduling a phone, in-person or virtual appointment. Not all daily appointments are being filled, so a convenient time may be available.

Because of the holiday, there may be a slight delay before benefits are deposited into bank accounts or loaded onto debit cards.

Unemployed workers claiming benefits in Michigan must report once every two weeks that they are unemployed and meet the eligibility requirements for benefits. Certification can be completed online through MiWAM or by phone through the Michigan Automated Response Voice Interactive Network (MARVIN). MARVIN can be reached toll-free at 1-866-638-3993.

Bi-weekly certification is just one of many services available to users through their MiWAM account. With an online account, claimants can access account information, review payment history, update contact information and more. MiWAM is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Claimants may login or sign up for an online account at Michigan.gov/UIA.
