LANSING, MI – Sparrow Health System’s top entities will receive new names that include the University of Michigan Health, effective April 1, 2024, as part of Sparrow joining the Michigan Medicine clinical network, according to health system officials.

The new names are:

  • E.W. Sparrow Hospital  University of Michigan Health-Sparrow Lansing
  • Sparrow Carson Hospital  University of Michigan Health-Sparrow Carson
  • Sparrow Clinton Hospital  University of Michigan Health-Sparrow Clinton
  • Sparrow Eaton Hospital  University of Michigan Health-Sparrow Eaton
  • Sparrow Ionia Hospital  University of Michigan Health-Sparrow Ionia

The news comes on the heels of the positive feedback Sparrow has received about the health system’s planned new name, the University of Michigan Health-Sparrow, which was announced two weeks ago. The new system name will also take effect on April 1, 2024.

Sparrow leaders said they selected the new entity names to leverage the strength of the two top healthcare brands in the state.

“It was important to maintain the legacy and continuity of our Community Hospitals and E.W. Sparrow Hospital and the equity they have built in their communities while drawing on the reputation of U-M Health as the preeminent health system in Michigan,” said James Dover, President, and CEO, Sparrow Health System.

Sparrow joined the University of Michigan Health in April 2023, contributing significantly to what is now the second-largest health system in the state.

The new names specifically don’t include “Hospital” because the individual campuses are more than just a hospital building. Patients are increasingly served on an outpatient basis at one of Sparrow’s more than 150 sites of care. The names are intended to reflect an ongoing change in how healthcare is delivered and the entire breadth of Sparrow services, leaders said.

Sparrow will continue to be known as Sparrow Health System in internal and external communications until April 1, 2024, when the new name becomes official.
