Governor Whitmer Announces New EV Battery & Charging Technology Projects in Detroit
Last week, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer announced approval for two foreign direct investment projects in Detroit through the Michigan Strategic Fund that will build on Michigan’s leadership in future mobility and electrification:
- Fortescue, an Australian manufacturer, developer, and operator of zero-emission resources for the production of renewable energy, has chosen an existing facility on Piquette Avenue in Detroit for its new U.S. Advanced Manufacturing Center. This move will create up to 600 manufacturing and engineering jobs, focusing on electric vehicle (EV) battery systems, hydrogen generators, fast chargers, and electrolyzers. Fortescue plans to invest $35 million initially and aims to have the first battery line installed by the first half of 2025.
- EcoG, A Munich-based EV charging technology provider, plans to establish its new U.S. headquarters in Detroit’s Corktown neighborhood. The facility, located within Newlab in Ford’s Michigan Central innovation district, aims to be the company’s North American operating base, contributing to Detroit’s role as a hub for innovative EV charging technology. The $14.4 million project is expected to create 45 high-wage jobs and aligns with Michigan’s efforts to lead in future mobility and electrification.
