Norm Hubbard, senior associate vice president for MSU Health Sciences, has been named as the next president of Henry Ford Health + Michigan State University Health Sciences. He will maintain his current role with MSU while overseeing the Henry Ford + MSU partnership’s priorities, which span across education, research, clinical care and health equity.

Hubbard assumes the role from inaugural president Steven Kalkanis, M.D., CEO of the Henry Ford Medical Group and Henry Ford Hospital, and associate dean of the MSU College of Human Medicine. Kalkanis will transition to serve on the Henry Ford + MSU Board of Directors.

“Shared leadership has always been our intention for this partnership,” said Adnan Munkarah, M.D., partnership board chair, and President, Care Delivery System and Chief Clinical Officer, Henry Ford Health. “We truly appreciate Norm’s commitment to furthering our efforts of transforming healthcare by modernizing clinical education, advancing translational research and expanding access to quality high value care across all our communities. Since the earliest planning stages, he has been a key contributor to the development of this 30-year partnership that brings a dramatic expansion to both institutions. His vision and experience have helped us make enormous strides and we look forward to his leadership for the next two years.”

Hubbard has been the primary MSU leader in the development of the new $335 million Henry Ford + MSU research center in Detroit and a key ambassador of the partnership across Future of Health initiatives that include Henry Ford, MSU and the Detroit Pistons. He has also served as vice chair of the Henry Ford + MSU cancer committee and is a member of the Henry Ford + MSU Board of Directors.

“This partnership has made impressive progress in just three short years,” Hubbard said. “I’m honored and excited to continue our work to bring real change in the way that health and wellness solutions are researched, created and delivered. There are significant benefits to be gained, and we’re committed to working with communities, providers, researchers and students to achieve our big goals.”

Hubbard brings more than 40 years of experience in health sciences and clinical care management to this role, with a significant emphasis on creating opportunities and alliances to advance cancer research. Prior to joining MSU, he served as the executive vice president of the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance, a collaboration between the University of Washington, the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and Seattle Children’s Hospital. He led the center to become one of the top-ranked NCI-designated cancer centers nationally. He has also held leadership roles at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston and at the University of Maryland Cancer Center in Baltimore.

Hubbard currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Patient Advocate Foundation. He previously held leadership positions on the Alliance of Dedicated Cancer Centers and the Pacific Science Center Board of Directors. He holds a B.S. in economics from George Mason University and an M.B.A. from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.
