LANSING, MI – Sparrow, as a member of the Mayo Clinic Care Network, is part of a nationally published study that shows a new recovery process for Patients can reduce how long they’re in the hospital and lower the use of opioids to treat their pain.Sparrow-1

The study, published in The Joint Commission Journal on Quality and Patient Safety 2017, demonstrates the local benefits of Sparrow’s relationship with Mayo Clinic and bringing their world-class expertise close to home.
Sparrow was among eight Mayo Clinic Care Network member hospitals that worked with Mayo Clinic leaders on implementing the Enhanced Recovery Process for colorectal surgery Patients. The process involves increased Patient pre-surgery education and gets them on their feet quicker.
Study co-author and Sparrow colorectal surgeon Daniel Coffey, M.D., collaborated with leaders from Mayo Clinic and member hospitals to design the complex process at Sparrow. He was overwhelmed by the results, which showed a 30 percent decline in hospital length of stay among the Patients studied and a 90 percent drop in use of opioids to treat them post-surgery.
“The most significant finding is a real-world display of how being a member of the Mayo Clinic Care Network allows the member hospitals to deliver better Patient care,” Dr. Coffey said. “Eight health systems, coming together under the leadership of Mayo Clinic, improved the surgical care of 800 or so Patients in eight different locations.”
The process has since been extended to other Patients at Sparrow.
