Detroit Business Owner Forms International Partnership to Support South African Female Artisans

Jeffrey Mosher speaks with MK (Michelle Klassen Merrigan), about her background and this special project. an uplifting story of two women from the U.S. and South Africa supporting 1800+ South African female artisans whose livelihoods are being threatened by the global pandemic.

Click below to hear MK discuss Mana Boxes in the podcast below!

These women's stories are heartbreaking and inspiring all at the same time. Sadie's husband was killed in the Congo Rwandan war and her village infiltrated by the Mai Mai, a militant group operating in the area. She and her MIL were raped and beaten repeatedly until Sadie managed to escape out of a window. Her journey to Cape Town was fraught with danger, you can read her story here.

Mich (as Anni affectionately calls her), is coordinating efforts here in the U.S. and fronted over $1mil to pay the South African artisans for the stylish accessories, décor, and fashions that will go inside every quarterly Mana subscription box. COVID has hit them especially hard and many are the sole earners for their entire families.

It's why Mich and Anni banded together, for Sadie and the thousands of women like her.  The Kickstarter campaign launched a few weeks ago, to provide the capital for Manaa quarterly subscription box featuring handcrafted, unique pieces created by over local women artisans in South Africa, like Sadie. The product is here in the U.S. and will begin shipping to subscribers in January 2021.
