Secure destruction of personal information critical in prevention of identity theft

LANSING, Mich. — LAFCU is offering free document shredding to the public at the credit union’s Shred Day, Saturday, Oct. 24, 10 a.m. to noon.

A mobile shredding truck will be at the LAFCU West Lansing Branch, 106 N. Marketplace Blvd. for on-site shredding. Masks will be required and social distancing measures will be in place.

“LAFCU offers this free service to the community because securing personal information is critical to preventing identity theft,” said Kelli Ellsworth Etchison, LAFCU chief marketing officer and chief diversity officer. “The cost of identity fraud goes beyond a potential financial loss. It can include your time and frustration in correcting credit reports and clearing your name of fraud.”

Each person may drop off up to 10 Bankers Boxes of materials to be shred.

Recommended materials include documents that have identifying information such as financial, medical and Social Security account numbers. This includes receipts, address labels, bills, insurance claims, tax forms and checking, savings and loan information.

Financial identity protection is a key LAFCU benefit for members. In addition to regular free Shred Days, LAFCU partners with CyberScout™ to offer identity management and monitoring services that include full identity-theft recovery assistance. More information is at www.LAFCU.com/CyberScout.
