LANSING, Mich. – Governor Gretchen Whitmer joined the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) today to announce two projects in Northern Michigan that will create 25 manufacturing jobs in Copemish and provide additional housing in Baldwin have been approved by the Michigan Strategic Fund.

Housing Outlook Remains Strong

  • Housing starts in May increased by 3.6% to 1.572 million annualized units, with consensus estimate predicting a 3.9% gain to 1.630 million.
  • Housing permits in May declined by 3.0% to 1.681 million annualized units, below the consensus expectation of an essentially flat month-over-month result of 1.730 million.
  • Supply chain bottlenecks will weigh on construction activity in the near term but building costs have begun to retreat after prices spiked through the first four months of 2021.

Peters Introduces Bipartisan Bill to Investigate Federal Vehicle Safety Tests

Current Vehicle Safety Testing Does Not Use Representative Female Crash Dummies; Bill Would Require a Government Accountability Office Study on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Use of Crash Test Dummies

WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Senator Gary Peters, a member of the Senate Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee, announced he introduced bipartisan legislation to improve the federal government’s vehicle safety testing practices, specifically around crash test dummies. The Furthering Advanced and Inclusive Research for Crash Tests Act (FAIR Crash Tests Act), which Peters introduced with U.S. Senator Deb Fischer (R-NE), would order a Government Accountability Office (GAO) study of federal vehicle safety tests. The tests fail to use crash test dummies that are representative of women, especially in the driver’s seat, even though research suggests that women have a higher likelihood of being killed or significantly injured in a car crash.
