Amplify GR  – Boston Square organizations use Dec. 4 Christmas tree lighting ceremony event as a unifying event for diverse cultures within neighborhood

Eight Boston Square area organizations and businesses are hosting a free, family-friendly Christmas tree lighting party at Boston Square Community Parklet Saturday, Dec. 4, at 4:30 p.m. The idea is based on the annual downtown Grand Rapids event, but organizers wanted to create an event that better reflects the diverse cultures found within the Boston Square area. The inaugural event, formally titled “Boston Square Community Christmas tree Lighting,”  will include a the ceremonial ‘flipping of the switch’, as well as music, food and talent from the neighborhood. The festivities kick off at 4:30 p.m., with a 6 p.m. lighting ceremony, at the Boston Square Community Parklet, located at 1505 Kalamazoo Avenue SE.

 

The Right Place, Inc. – 25th annual economic outlook event to be held Dec. 9

Grand Rapids economic development agency The Right Place, Inc. will host its 25th iteration of the annual Economic Outlook presentation  Thursday, Dec. 9, from 8-9 a.m. This year’s event will be held via livestream and include presentations by Right Place president & CEO Randy Thelen as well as University of Michigan reginal economic specialist Don Grimes. A media-only news conference will be held immediately following the presentation.

Compass College of Cinematic Arts – Local film school to announce name change at 25th anniversary celebration Dec. 9

A local film school that has graduated some of Hollywood and Madison Avenue’s most successful film and advertising production talent will announce a name change at a special Dec. 9 event celebrating the school’s 25th anniversary. At the event, Compass College of Cinematic Arts leaders will announce that in 2022 the school will be known as Compass College of Film and Media. Former professional football player-turned actor T.C. Stallings will speak at the invite-only Compass Faith and Film event at 7 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 9, at the college’s campus in downtown Grand Rapids. Interviews with Compass leaders are available.

Essence Restaurant Group – Bistro Bella Vita general manager becomes only public sommelier in Grand Rapids to achieve level 3 certification

Tristan Walczewski, the general manager of popular downtown Grand Rapids restaurant Bistro Bella Vita has achieved a level 3 sommelier designation (out of 4 levels), making him the highest-ranking sommelier available at any public restaurant in the region and believed to be one of only three in the area to achieve this ranking (the other 2 are private sommeliers). Tristan is available to discuss what goes into achieving this ranking and what it means to area wine consumers who are seeking the best pairing options available. Tristan al so has released his ‘top 10’ list of holiday wines and can discuss those items.

 

Grand Rapids Public Schools Foundation -  Friends of GR Parks leader tapped as new CEO of Grand Rapids Public Schools Foundation

Stephanie Adams, a longtime nonprofit leader and community organizer, has been named President and chief executive officer of the Grand Rapids Public Schools Foundation (GRPSF), the fundraising partner of Grand Rapids Public Schools. Adams, a 1994 graduate of Ottawa Hills High School, starts Dec. 15. She comes from Friends of Grand Rapids Parks, where she served as executive director since 2017. Holland Home - CEO of West Michigan's largest senior services provider announces retirement

Holland Home president and chief executive officer Mina Breuker has announced her intention to retire after 23 years serving the region’s largest and most diverse senior services nonprofit. Breuker, 64, will step down Jan. 1, 2022, at which time current chief operating officer Troy Vugteveen will assume the president/CEO title. Breuker will transition to president emeritus for three months, allowing for a smooth transition within the chief executive office. This news is part of a multiyear succession plan that saw several longtime leaders assume executive roles, ensuring continuity throughout the leadership ranks of the organization.
