Transcript:

QUESTION: What impact did the pandemic have on the services the BST provided to employers?

ANSWER: In all honesty, services did not really change. We still provided the same services, but some of our methods changed. We could no longer meet in person with businesses, so the way in which we provided services pivoted. Many companies were already struggling to find candidates, and the pandemic made that even worse. The innovation that was required because of new regulations and restrictions provided an opportunity for some companies to finally explore new recruiting sources and methods. We were able to help some employers explore virtual and phone interviews for the first time. Also, instead of in person "Employer of the Day" events at CAMW! American Job Centers, we were able to offer employers a free virtual job fair platform through the State of Michigan.

QUESTION: What other adaptations and pivots to services did the BST have during 2020?

ANSWER: In terms of our own workflow changes, the BST began working from home and using cell phones and laptops in a way that we hadn’t before. For our employers, we shared best practices about additional recruiting sources and methods that most of them had not tried yet, including virtual job fairs. We also co-facilitated a “Remote Hiring—legal issues, best practices” webinar for employers with Lansing Community College and the Lansing Regional Chamber of Commerce. Over 80 people participated and speakers included Loomis Law, MSU, LCC and Dewpoint. To help increase our employers’ visibility, during CAMW!’s Rebound MI series with FOX 47, the BST served as panelists or found employers to be panelists for several of the Facebook Live segments.

QUESTION: How many businesses did the BST serve this year? What sort of impact did that service have on our region?

ANSWER: In total, the BST served 360 businesses. Thanks to BST services, there were 1615 jobs filled in our region. Some of the other BST accomplishments this year included: ● 1 insurance company held an event through which they hired 55 Customer Service workers. ● 1 healthcare company hosted Employer of the Day seeking 30 CNAs, plus many other openings at one of our American Job Centers. 100 candidates attended and over 60 interviews were conducted and the company commented on the high quality of the candidates. ● 9 employers participated in the Clinton County Manufacturers job fair and 247 job seekers attended. ● 1 landscape company held a job fair and hired 2 employees. ● 1 manufacturer hired 200 Production Team Members ● 1 manufacturer held a job fair on a Saturday with social distancing for 50 general labor openings. 54 people attended and 34 were hired. ● 1 healthcare company held an outdoor in-person job fair and there were 50 hires on the spot. ● We assisted the Capital Area Regional Airport with their search for CEO candidates and we collaborated with local economic development and the State of MI for one manufacturer to hire 100 workers. ● 1 Fidelity Bond. ● We worked with Pure Michigan Talent Connect staff to get a form signed for a large employer for immigration purposes. ● The BST co-hosted a virtual Insurance Forum with Davenport University and LCC. 9 insurance companies and 120 students and members of the public participated. ● We hosted a virtual “Apprenticeship 101” presentation during National Apprenticeship Week.

QUESTION: What do you have to say to the local business community going into 2021?

ANSWER: This year has been a difficult one for everyone. We know businesses are hurting and we’ve proven this year that we’re still here to help. Even though there have been so many adjustments this year in how our services are provided, we never stopped services. While everything around us may be changing, our dedication to the employers we serve has not changed. We’re thankful that so many businesses trust us to aid them and we’re looking forward to another year of adapting and innovating to continue to serve our business community.

QUESTION: How can businesses who haven't previously worked with CAMW! get involved with the BST in 2021?

ANSWER: Employers can reach out to me by calling 517-492-5516 or by emailing me at TSand@camw.net.
