Peters Bipartisan Bill to Improve Federal Government’s Response to Emergencies Passes Senate

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Bipartisan legislation introduced by U.S. Senator Gary Peters (MI) that would better meet the needs of disaster survivors has passed the Senate. This legislation, known as the Helping Eliminate Limitations for Prompt Response and Recovery Act, would repeal an outdated section of the Post-Katrina Emergency Management Reform Act of 2006 (PKEMRA) in order to streamline support for disaster survivors and enable the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to more effectively respond to emergencies.

Continuing Claims Rose by 4K in Early March 

•             Initial claims for unemployment insurance edged down by 2,000 to 210,000 in the week ending March 16. The four-week moving average rose by 3,0000 to 211,000.

•             Continuing claims rose by 4,000 to 1.807 million in the week ending March 9 and the four-week moving average rose by 5,000 to 1.802 million.

•                 The FOMC kept the fed funds rate unchanged, in a range of between 5.25% and 5.50%. The FOMC maintained a bias toward rate cuts.

•                 The dot plot is about evenly split between two and three fed funds rate cuts in 2024, with additional cuts in 2025.
