FLINT, Mich. — The Sylvester Broome Empowerment Village (SBEV) Sportsplex has received a gift of $500,000 from Mat Ishbia, United Wholesale Mortgage CEO and first-time donor to the city of Flint.

“I’m honored, and so proud, to contribute to the community and to the kids in Flint,” commented Ishbia. “The SBEV Sportsplex will enable them to develop their leadership skills through sports and teamwork, which will help empower them and lead them on a road to success.”

In January of 2020, SBEV was funded $250,000 via The National Football League (NFL) Foundation, Detroit Lions and Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC) Grassroots Initiative. This donation will help the dream of a sports complex on Flint’s north end to come to life. The entire city of Flint will benefit from this and our sports programs will grow exponentially. Mat’s connection to the city of Flint starts with his time as a member of the 2000 National Championship Michigan State Basketball program, where he teamed alongside the Flintstones, Mateen Cleaves, Charlie Bell, Morris Peterson, and Antonio Smith

Words cannot describe the impact this donation will have on the youth of Flint for generations to come. This is a game charger. - Maryum Rasool, Executive Director

About Sylvester Broome Empowerment Village Sportsplex
SBEV has 62,000 square feet of space wholly devoted to the developmental needs of north
Flint’s youth population who have been deemed “at-risk.” Eventually, the SBEV mission is to
reach all youth in the city of Flint. The space is dedicated for learning, developing, leading and
investing in children and youth through employment, community health, and community
engagement. At SBEV we firmly believe that if we empower and provide the resources to youth,
they will be the catalyst to drive change in the community. SBEV plans to provide youth a safe
harbor and an alternative to gangs, drugs, and violence. SBEV is a tribble threat of Athletics,
Artistry and Academics.
The Flint Sports Complex (Sportsplex) 56,000 square foot will be a premier youth development
center, health, and athletic destination that will act as a catalyst in changing the narrative of
Flint. We will expand our program and provide further opportunities for children to experience
different programs, uncover their passion, and develop their skills and abilities while
becoming successful students and productive community members. The Flint Sports
Complex will also be a thriving community gathering place hosting various events such as
conferences, roundtables, and live performances.
