PMBC | Outdoor Recreation Industry Opportunities for Michigan Businesses

The Michigan Economic Development Corporation’s (MEDC) Pure Michigan Business Connect (PMBC) and Community Development teams, along with the Michigan Outdoor Industry Office are excited to announce several initiatives for Michigan outdoor recreation businesses. The MEDC and Outdoor Industry Office partnership provides valuable opportunities to grow the state’s outdoor recreation manufacturing and retail and destination businesses, while fostering the growth of the recreation economy and vibrant communities across the state.



Sept. 15: West Michigan Outdoor Recreation Industry Support Webinar

Join the MEDC, The Right Place and the Michigan Outdoor Industry Office for the West Michigan Outdoor Recreation Industry Support webinar. The virtual event will feature highlights from outdoor recreation resource partners including the DNR Parks and Recreation Division and the Small Business Development Center (SBDC), followed by a panel discussion featuring successful West Michigan outdoor recreation businesses. The webinar will highlight activity in West Michigan but is open to any Michigan business interested in attending as valuable resources across the state will be discussed.

Oct. 27: West Michigan Outdoor Recreation Industry Pitch Competition

The MEDC has partnered with The Right Place and theMichigan Outdoor Industry Office on an initiative providing growth opportunities to outdoor recreation small businesses looking for support to start or scale operations. This regional event is for businesses geographically located in Mason, Lake, Oceana, or Newaygo Counties. Selected applicants will be invited to a virtual pitch competition on Oct. 27, with awardees receiving customized support services. Submit a small business application by Sept. 30.

Michigan Outdoor Industry Supply Chain Portal

Michigan’s capabilities in product design, advanced materials production and manufacturing provides an ability to reinvent the world of outdoor adventure products that is unsurpassed. With more commercial and industrial designers than any other state, Michigan offers plenty of opportunities for the outdoor industry to thrive. This initiative is intended to collect information about the outdoor industry supply base in Michigan, and to capture the demand to source products and services from Michigan suppliers, in order to provide connections that help increase the economic impact of the outdoor industry in Michigan. Closing Sept. 30: Outdoor Industry Workforce Assessment Survey

The Michigan Outdoor Industry Office is interested in learning more about the unique needs of the industry’s workforce, to help identify opportunities to provide additional support to outdoor recreation businesses. In order to build proper career paths and ensure the next generation of outdoor recreation employees, an Outdoor Industry Workforce Assessment Survey has been launched by a national partner group. The Michigan Outdoor Industry Office will gather information through the survey about the state’s industry needs for workforce development and diversity, equity and inclusion advancement. By participating, you will help guide future opportunities for support and contribute toward a more diverse, equitable and inclusive outdoor industry.
