Videos showcase high-demand, high-wage fields under a theme of college, credentials and careers

LANSING, Mich. — Michigan College Access Network has released a new video series, “Roadmap to Opportunity,” to promote high-demand, high-wage fields in Michigan. These seven videos and their associated information sheets showcase college, credentials and careers in the fields of carpentry, dental hygiene, electrical technology, heating & cooling (HVACR), information technology, insurance and physical therapy. Each video was filmed on a college campus in Michigan and features perspectives from a student, a college instructor and an employer.

MichCANThe videos and information sheets are housed on a new microsite: roadmap2opportunity.org.

“MCAN is committed to promoting clear career pathways through postsecondary certificates and degrees,” said Ryan Fewins-Bliss, executive director of MCAN. “The ‘Roadmap to Opportunity’ series provides a set of tools for school counselors, college advisers and others who work with youth. These educators can use these new assets to help K-12 students and adults without a postsecondary degree or certificate learn about opportunities and see a future path that includes college, credentials and careers.”

Each information sheet introduces the field, shows a map of educational offerings in Michigan, provides projected job openings and estimated growth, as well as salaries/job titles associated with the various levels of postsecondary education—which includes certificates, associate degrees and bachelor’s degrees.

The information sheets use data compiled from the State of Michigan Department of Technology, Management & Budget’s publication, “Michigan’s Hot 50 through 2026,” along with data from O*NET OnLine, a database of occupational information.

The videos showcase academic programs at Delta College, Kalamazoo Valley Community College, Lansing Community College, Mott Community College, Northern Michigan University, Northwestern Michigan College and Oakland Community College.

MCAN worked with these seven employers, who are featured in the video series: Northwest Carpentry, Farm Bureau Insurance, Building Functional Esthetics, Johnson Controls, Rockwell International, Secure-24 and Health Source Saginaw.

This project was made possible by funding from the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation in Flint.

MCAN will provide professional development training on stackable credentials to school counselors beginning in April. MCAN also anticipates recording more videos in additional fields in the next one to two years to continue providing resources and tools to help encourage postsecondary education in Michigan.

ABOUT THE MICHIGAN COLLEGE ACCESS NETWORK (MCAN)
As the leader in the state’s college access movement, MCAN’s mission is to increase Michigan’s college readiness, participation and completion rates, particularly among low-income students, first-generation college-going students and students of color. For the eighth year in a row, Michigan’s postsecondary educational attainment rate has increased — from 35.7% of 25-to-64-year-olds possessing at least an associate degree in 2008, to 41% in 2018. Additionally, it is estimated another 4% of Michiganders have a high-quality certificate, bringing Michigan’s official attainment rate to 45% as of 2019. It is MCAN’s goal to increase Michigan’s postsecondary educational attainment rate to 60% by 2030. For more information, visit micollegeaccess.org.
