Michigan College Access Network’s AdviseMI program, also known as Advise Michigan, is now hiring 37 college advisers for the 2020-21 school year. These AmeriCorps advisers serve in selected high schools across Michigan, particularly high schools in communities with low college-going rates and low adult educational attainment rates.

MichCANRecent bachelor’s degree or master’s degree recipients serve alongside high school counselors and other school professionals to support students as they make the transition from high school to postsecondary education. Advisers serve full time and focus on advising students through the complex steps toward college enrollment. Advisers provide students and their families with relevant information regarding the benefits of a postsecondary education, preparing for college attendance, and the admission and financial aid processes.

“Serving in this AmeriCorps role is an outstanding way to begin your professional career,” said Ryan Fewins-Bliss, executive director of MCAN. “Following their service, our advisers go onto prestigious graduate programs, careers in higher education, and beyond.”

This service role provides an annual stipend of $25,000, four weeks of all-expense paid college access/preparation training, health insurance, and a $6,195 education award to pay back student loans or pursue graduate education.

Applicants must also be a United States citizen, a national or a legal permanent resident and at least 18 years old. Proof of age and citizenship will be required during the selection process.

ABOUT ADVISEMI
AdviseMI, an AmeriCorps program through the Michigan College Access Network (MCAN), has grown to become one of the largest programs in the state to improve access to higher education. Typically, 56 AmeriCorps members serve as college advisers in more than 70 high schools across the state, providing college access resources to high school students. AdviseMI works to increase the number of high school students who enter and complete postsecondary education by placing well-trained, near-peer college advisers into high schools across Michigan, particularly those with low college-going rates.

ABOUT THE MICHIGAN COLLEGE ACCESS NETWORK (MCAN)
As the leader in the state’s college access movement, MCAN’s mission is to increase Michigan’s college readiness, participation and completion rates, particularly among low-income students, first-generation college-going students and students of color. For the eighth year in a row, Michigan’s postsecondary educational attainment rate has increased — from 35.7% of 25-to-64-year-olds possessing at least an associate degree in 2008, to 41% in 2018. Additionally, it is estimated another 4% of Michiganders have a high-quality certificate, bringing Michigan’s official attainment rate to 45% as of 2019. It is MCAN’s goal to increase Michigan’s postsecondary educational attainment rate to 60% by 2030. For more information, visit micollegeaccess.org.
