Drops By 96% in 10 Years [New CommercialCafe Report]

Following up on our previous analysis of the country’s fastest-growing jobs from 2012 through 2021, CommercialCafe’s newest report shifts the focus toward the occupations that saw the sharpest decline during that same timeframe.

Here are some highlights:

  • The fastest-declining job in Michigan was middle school career/technical education teachers, which decreased by 96% over 10 years. This decline translated to the number of employees in this occupation dropping from 1,060 in 2012 to 40 in 2021 — a loss of 1,020 Michigan middle school career/technical education teachers in a decade.
  • Education-related jobs saw the sharpest decline in 2 other states besides Michigan: Louisiana, where the fastest declining job of the decade was kindergarten teachers (except special education); and Rhode Island, where it was library technicians that recorded the sharpest percentage drop over 10 years.
  • The 10 fastest-declining occupations across the country are related to industrial, entertainment, arts, and business activities.
