The new year in Michigan is off to a strong start, with the Michigan Central Station Ford Detroit Redevelopment Project receiving national recognition as one of the top development deals for 2018.

With the support of partners including the Michigan Economic Development Corporation, the Detroit Economic Growth Corporation, the city of Detroit, and others, the finished project will become the “centerpiece” of Ford’s new 1.2 million-square-foot Corktown campus and mobility hub. The remaining 300,000 square feet will serve as a mix of community and retail space, residential housing, and commercial space for local entrepreneurs.

Business Facilities awarded the project its 2018 Economic Development Deal of the Year Bronze Award, anticipating that the facility will “become the crown jewel of Detroit’s turbocharged recovery.”

“Ford’s Corktown project is a high-impact development that showcases the collaboration happening here in Michigan to bring about transformational results in our communities,” said Jeff Mason, CEO of MEDC. “This award is a recognition on a national level of the partnerships and opportunities Michigan offers for business expansion and future economic growth here in the state.”

With an overall investment of $738 million, the state-of-the-art Corktown facility will be where Ford and its partners develop autonomous and electric vehicles, and design urban mobility services and solutions that includes smart, connected vehicles, roads, parking and public transit. While Michigan is known as the birthplace of the traditional automobile and put the world on wheels more than a century ago, the competition to lead the next generation of transportation is fierce. This investment is bolstering a new mobility industry in the state and positions the Motor City to lead the next transportation revolution.

Another Michigan company, Consumers Energy, also received Honorable Mention for its role in the Spartan Michigan dairy processing facility. The processing facility in St. Johns – which will be one of the largest dairy processing facilities in the country when complete – also received support from the Michigan Strategic Fund.
