Brian holds the position of CEO at the Michigan Health & Hospital Association (MHA), one of the nation’s largest state hospital associations. His responsibilities include executive leadership of the MHA Health Foundation, a 501c3 nonprofit entity, as well as the MHA Service Corporation, which provides fee-based services to the healthcare field.

In his 30 years with the MHA, Brian has served as the Executive Vice President and the Senior Vice President of Advocacy. In these roles, he was responsible for state and federal government relations on behalf of nearly 150 Michigan community hospitals and served as the Treasurer of HEALTHPAC, the association’s political action committee (PAC) which ranks among the largest independent PACs in Michigan. He has also served as the association’s director of the Legislative Policy Panel, the Business Advisory Council, the Council of Physicians, the
Council on Small or Rural Hospitals, and the Council on Osteopathic Health Care. In addition, he has delivered over 500 presentations on the future of health care to hospital management, governance, and medical staff, and is a contributing author of “Technology and the Future of Health Care: Preparing for the Next Thirty Years” released in January 2000 by the AHA Press. He is a frequent spokesperson on behalf of Michigan hospitals with the print and electronic media and has testified on hospital priorities before Congress and the state legislature.

Brian serves on the MHA Board of Trustees, the MHA Health Foundation Board, the MHA Keystone Center Board, and the MHA Service Corporation Board. He is a member of the American Hospital Association (AHA) Regional Policy Board (Region 5) and serves as the Chairman of the State Issues Forum Steering Committee. He has served as a member of the American Hospital Association Political Action Committee (AHAPAC) Board of Directors, the
AHA Health Forum Board, and the AHA Nova Award Selection Committee. He is a current member of the State Hospital Association Executive Forum (SHAEF) and the AHA Strategic Leadership Group (SLG) for Urban Hospital Sustainability.

He currently serves on the Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Michigan (BCBSM) Board of Directors and Executive Committee, including the BCBSM Health Care Delivery Committee and Audit Committee. Brian is a member of The Capitol Club and the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE). He is also a member of the Selection Committee for the 2020 Gail Warden Leadership Excellence Award for the National Center for Healthcare Leadership. Most recently, he became a member of the Advisory Board for the new Michigan State University Broad College of Business, Master of Science in Healthcare Management (MSHCM) Program, he was appointed by Governor Gretchen Whitmer to serve on the Michigan 2020 Census Complete Count Committee and recently became an advisor and member of Michigan Economic Recovery Council (MERC), a council of senior health and business leaders formed to
provide guidance to Governor Whitmer during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Brian has served as the fundraising host and finance committee member for multiple candidates for state and congressional office, Chairman of the Tomorrow’s Child Board, Chairman of the YMCA of Michigan Board, Chairman of the Michigan Youth in Government Board, Vice-Chairman of the Michigan Health Insurance Access Advisory Council, served on the Citizens Research Council of Michigan Board, and a past board member for Next Plane
Solutions. He has served as a member of the Detroit Metropolitan Convention and Visitors’ Bureau Medical Meetings Advisory Committee, the Gift of Life of Michigan Advisory Board, Coverys Insurance Services Michigan Advisory Board, Michigan State University Michigan Political Leadership Program Board, and the Alliance for Advancing Nonprofit Healthcare Board. He has also served as Treasurer of the Michigan Rural Health Association, Coordinator of
the Michigan Organization of Nurse Executives, Coordinator of the Michigan Osteopathic Hospital Association, and Trustee of Charlevoix Area Hospital.

He holds a Master’s Degree in Health Services Administration from the University of Michigan and a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration from Michigan State University; completed an executive fellowship with the National Center for Healthcare Leadership; completed the Health Executive’s Development Program at Cornell University; and studied the British health care system with the King’s Fund College in London. Brian is a United States Coast Guard-licensed Captain and was formerly the President of Charlevoix Marine Services, Inc., a
sportfishing charter service operating out of Charlevoix, Michigan.
