LANSING - To kick off a new year of service, the Michigan Community Service Commission will virtually bring together more than 500 Michigan’s AmeriCorps members on Nov. 18 at the 2021 AmeriCorps Member Celebration, with a “What’s at your core?” theme. The event will feature a special swearing-in ceremony with the AmeriCorps pledge.

AmeriCorps members have a true heart for service,” Michigan Community Service Commission Executive Director Ginna Holmes said. “They will help make our state stronger and more resilient, and we are proud to support them and their commitment to helping others.”

The celebration helps members gain a new perspective on the impact their AmeriCorps service has on communities throughout Michigan and provides valuable training, networking and teambuilding workshops where members can enhance their professional development.

In the 2020/2021 program year, members served 33,275 Michigan youth, treated 1,026 acres of public land, and provided 2,451 individuals access to nutrition and hunger resources.

Michigan’s AmeriCorps provides statewide people power. During the previous funding cycle for the 2020/2021 program year, the MCSC granted out $9.4 million to AmeriCorps State programs, resulting in $24.5 million total in AmeriCorps programs, including local match funds and federal education awards. In total, MCSC funded 28 AmeriCorps programs that engaged 1,000 members in service.

Since 1994, more than 34,000 Michigan residents have served approximately 51 million hours and earned education awards totaling more than $122.2 million.
