Hear how some local start-ups have managed adversity and opportunity against a backdrop of labor shortages, supply chain disruptions, funding constraints, workforce dynamics, and more. Learn what companies are doing to adjust to the new realities, and ways they found to survive – and even thrive.

ABOUT BIOARBOR

BioArbor is an entirely volunteer-run organization that hosts educational networking events for the life sciences industry in the greater Ann Arbor area.
 
Each event features a networking session followed by a panel discussion with invited speakers from both the national and local ecosystems and a post-presentation Q&A period. Speaker expertise varies based on the discussion topic but all have experience in areas such as drug discovery and development, medical devices, diagnostics, and tools.
 
Events are scheduled approximately six times per year, are free and open to the public, and are especially suited for those interested in starting or growing life science businesses.

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS
Lisa McLaughlin, Co-Founder and Co-CEO, WorkIt Health
 
Lisa McLaughlin is a social entrepreneur, pioneer in the field of health informatics, and Co-CEO and Co-Founder of Workit Health. As the leader of Workit’s business development efforts and clinical strategy, she drives Workit’s outcomes research and value based partnerships with health plans. As Principal Investigator on Workit’s translational research initiatives with the National Science Foundation and National Institute on Drug Abuse, Lisa keeps Workit’s model at the forefront of personalized care, predictive analytics and artificial intelligence for substance use recovery.
 
Lisa holds Masters of Social Work and Information Science from the University of Michigan and brings over two decades of experience in technology development and healthcare. She serves on the board of several economic empowerment initiatives, including Venture for America Detroit and The University of Michigan Accelerate Blue Fund. Lisa has been named a Schwab Foundation Social Entrepreneur of the Year, a Crain’s Notable Woman in Health, and an Ernst and Young Midwest Entrepreneur of the Year. Her work has been featured in JAMA, NIDA News, WIRED, The Economist, and the New York Times. 
 
Daniel Siegal, MD, Co-Founder and CEO, Navv Systems
 
Dr. Siegal is a radiologist, computer scientist, innovator, and leader. He has over 15 years of experience in clinical radiology and informatics. His vision for Navv is to provide easy-to-use technology to hospital administrators, clinicians, and support teams. Dr. Siegal speaks nationally at industry conferences and HIMSS virtual summits.
 
Dr. Siegal loves travel with his family, recent trips include Waimea Canyon, White Mountains of New Hampshire, and the Na Pali Coast.
 
Margarita Hernandez, PhD, Vice President of Entrepreneurial Services, Ann Arbor SPARK
 
Margarita is the director of entrepreneurial services at Ann Arbor SPARK. After completing her BS degree in Microbiology and Immunology in 2009 from the University of Texas at San Antonio, she moved to Ann Arbor from her hometown of Austin. It was here that she earned a doctorate in Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology from the University of Michigan in 2016.
 
Following graduate school, she joined Fast Forward Medical Innovation at the University of Michigan supporting healthcare commercialization education courses and mentoring biomedical innovation projects for medical students and clinicians. Later catching the entrepreneur bug, Margarita joined a budding medical device and software startup, Pathware, where she supported both clinical business development and later operations as the chief operations officer that was later acquired in summer of 2022. Additionally, she has been an advisor for a number of life science companies and ecosystem connector supporting the local med-tech ecosystem in Michigan.
 
Given her entrepreneur experiences and passion to mentor and work on critical problems, she now promotes growing startups through their milestones with the resources and services offered by SPARK.
