LANSING, Mich. – Metals and plastics recycling company Schupan & Sons Incorporated is expanding at two locations in Kalamazoo with support from the Michigan Strategic Fund, the Michigan Economic Development Corporation announced today.
The project is expected to generate total private investment of $10.1 million and create 80 jobs. Michigan was chosen for the expansion over competing sites in Indiana and Ohio.
“Schupan & Sons’ decision to invest in Kalamazoo rather than in other states means good jobs for Michigan residents and underscores the strength of the state’s manufacturing talent,” said Jeff Mason (Shown Left), CEO of MEDC, the state’s chief marketing and business attraction arm that administers programs and performs due diligence on behalf of the MSF.
“We’re pleased to work with our local partners and support this investment, and we look forward to working with the company as it continues to grow and add jobs in Michigan,” Mason said.
Schupan & Sons Incorporated, founded in 1968, began as a
non-ferrous industrial scrap processor and has grown to five divisions throughout Michigan, Indiana, Illinois and Ohio: electronics recycling, industrial recycling, beverage container processing, materials trading, and aluminum and plastic sales.
The aluminum and plastic sales division is a leading Midwestern metals service center specializing in a full line of new aluminum and plastic mill products. Its manufacturing division, headquartered in Kalamazoo, utilizes state-of-the-art technology, producing complex components for the medical device, aerospace, and office furniture industries. The division will be adding 40,000 square feet and expects to add an additional 50 employees over the next three years. The electronics recycling division will also be expanding its Kalamazoo footprint and anticipates adding an additional 30 employees over the next three years.
Both projects will increase the existing manufacturing capacities and add needed office space, with a total investment of more than $10.1 million and the creation of 80 jobs in the city of Kalamazoo. As a result, the company has been awarded a $500,000 Michigan Business Development Program performance-based grant.
