Interns benefit a company’s bottom line by making real contributions to productivity and offer the potential for a well-trained entry level hire. MEDC’s International Trade and Development Internship Program assists in the recruitment and qualification of enthusiastic students for Michigan exporters to select from. The program also offsets the cost of hosting an intern with 50 percent reimbursement of the intern’s wages so companies can focus resources on expanding their reach in international markets.

New for 2021, the program is offered to qualified companies statewide. Reimbursement is available up to $3,600 on work completed by September 30, 2021.

BENEFITS OF AN INTERN

  • Provides a fresh prospective
  • Extra set of hands in the organization
  • Direct access to cutting-edge strategies and technologies cultivated within universities
  • Closes the skills gap by providing real-world experience and enhances the local workforce

REQUIREMENTS

  • Companies must be in accordance with Small Business Administration guidelines and size standards
  • Work performed by the intern must be related to export development and completed by September 30, 2021
  • Companies must apply by December 31, 2020

THE PROCESS

MEDC recruits and reviews student applicants for companies in the program to interview and evaluate. Once companies and students are matched, each company determines their individual internship start date and duration, compensation and exact schedule. In an export orientation prior to internship start dates, companies and students will learn together what export services are available, understand key export concepts and develop sample projects for the student to complete during their internship.
