John WalshJohn Walsh, President/CEO of the Michigan Manufacturers Association, talks with Chris Holman about how the manufacturing industry has been doing since the arrival of COVID-19. In the interview, they cover how manufacturing has done well at mitigating risks and is cautiously optimistic about the future.

Watch John share manufacturers association details with Chris in the full interview now!

During their discussion, John and Chris cover how COVID was dealt with and how manufacturing is working to emerge. John notes that it was a tough year, manufacturing went through risk mitigation. They're always ready for some forms of risk, but dealing with it, back since last May, now sees supply chain challenges, but that should be smoothed out by the end of the year.

John notes that the talent shortage, which was the problem before COVID resumed much quicker in this sector. A shortage still exists, as easily 20,000 manufacturing jobs could be filled right now across Michigan.

At this point, the biggest challenges include things like child care,... when kids not in school, those working moms and dads have to make extra arrangements not expected during the school year. Productivity in manufacturing has to be in person as the people need to be on the floor and there to do the job!

Elsewhere, advocacy remains important for MMA, to connect with leaders, along with watching state, national/federal issues that impact their companies.

Confidence is good, but cautious, at this point in May 2021 the concern is not top about labor costs, but rather the cost of raw goods, and fuel, this may hamper the recovery.

Finally, the Michigan Manufacturers Association deals with Michigan Works!, and LEO, among organizations in Michigan to work with, and he's pleased with the level of cooperation.
"Established in 1902, MMA now represents the interests and needs of nearly 1,700 member companies, ranging from small manufacturers to the world’s largest and most well-known corporations. The MMA Board of Directors is an elected entity featuring industry leaders poised to enhance manufacturing’s growth and long-term competitiveness.

The MMA Service Corporation (MMASC), established in 1980, is MMA’s for-profit subsidiary. The MMASC Board of Directors oversees the functions and operations of the Service Corporation." - https://mimfg.org/ABOUT-US/About-MMA
