Student Summit is a continuation of the college’s participation in national initiative

LANSING, Mich. – Lansing Community College will hold a Student Summit on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. Friday, Sept. 20 at its Downtown Campus. The Student Summit is a continuation of the college’s participation in the yearlong national commemoration of the 400 Years of African American History Commission Act.

LCC joined the nationwide commemoration of four centuries of African American History in the U.S. and the Summit is the fifth event the college has held as part of its observance.

“The summit is an opportunity for both high school and college students to gather, learn and participate in a day where their voices will be heard,” said LCC chief diversity officer Dr. Tonya Bailey. “We are excited to have 375 students coming to experience a day that will leave them empowered and inspired to champion causes in their community,” said Bailey. “The awakening of minds and creating awareness is directly related to our participation in the 400 Years of African American History Commission Act. The determination, perseverance and achievement of great accomplishments in the face of mighty oppression is the spirit we want students to leave with.”

There will be 14 speakers throughout the day connecting with students in break-out sessions and workshops covering topics that include entrepreneurship, financial literacy, mental health, diversity and inclusion, social media branding, civic engagement and empowerment.

Summit speakers include State Representative Sarah Anthony who is serving her first full term in the 68th House District which includes part of the city of Lansing and Lansing Township. Sworn into her partial term November 2018, she became the first African American woman to serve in this capacity in Lansing’s history. In 2012, Lansing residents elected her to the Ingham County Board of Commissioners making her the youngest African American woman to serve in this capacity in the United States.

The luncheon keynote speaker is Michigan State University graduate Shon Hart. The former Spartan football player is an author, premier motivational speaker, and founder of InvolvedDad where he helps restore relationships within fragile families. The married father of three works to equip fathers with the tools that lead to success, while energizing and motivating diverse audiences to meet the challenges of the world around them and live with purpose.
