The Lansing Board of Water & Light (BWL) opened a 100-year-old time capsule from the former “Municipal Power Plant Moores Park Station,” later renamed Eckert Power Station, on the 100-year anniversary of the cornerstone of the plant being laid Friday, August 5 at 11:30 am.

This took place at BWL REO Depot, 1201 S. Washington Ave., Lansing, MI, with BWL General Manager Dick Peffley heading up the event.

The time capsule was carefully removed from the plant on Monday, July 25. Contents expected inside include copies of the local paper, coins from that time, a silk American flag, construction plans for the plant, assorted photographs, copies of the rates for electricity, water, and steam heat, and other BWL and City of Lansing historical documents.

The cornerstone for Moores Park Station was laid on August 5, 1922, and the plant was first commissioned in 1924, which drove BWL’s growth to deliver power to the region. The plant was later renamed to Otto E. Eckert Power Station in honor of a former BWL general manager and decommissioned in 2020.
