LANSING, Mich., Jan. 31, 2023— The K-12 Alliance of Michigan expressed its support today as the Michigan Senate Education Committee passed Senate Bill 12, moving it to the Senate Floor for final passage. SB 12 would repeal the damaging forced retention of third-grade students who fall behind on reading comprehension and would instead empower schools and parents to work together to design a plan to get students back on track to success.

"We are thankful for Senator Polehanki and the Senate Education Committee for righting a mistake made when this law was passed that has harmed too many kids across Michigan," said Robert McCann, Executive Director of the K-12 Alliance of Michigan. "By removing the law's focus on punishing students that have fallen behind and allowing educators to instead partner with parents to design a recovery plan specific to their student, we will help kids across Michigan learn, grow and succeed once again."
