In the latest progress toward attracting economic development and employment opportunities to the region, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer on Oct. 12 announced two business expansions creating 424 Jobs and generating $23 million of investment in Genesee County.

  • Supply chain management provider NorthGate bringing up to 374 jobs to Burton, investing $13 million
  • Auto supplier DAG Technology establishing a new manufacturing facility in Grand Blanc Township, investing $10 million

Yesterday’s news follows the Oct. 1 announcement of the $10.4 million investment to build the Innovation and Technology Center at the University of Michigan-Flint where the College of Innovation & Technology will be based. That project is expected to 120 jobs and retains another 175 jobs.

Meanwhile, Premier Security Solutions (PSS) on Sept. 30 announced the purchase of the Ferris Wheel, a community hub, shared workspace, and office building from Skypoint Ventures and Phil Hagerman. The security firm, one of the fastest-growing companies in southeastern Michigan, will move its headquarters to the seventh floor of the building. The business model and operation of the Ferris Wheel will remain the same.

Dave Forystek, a retired Flint police officer, started PSS in 2013 after he was approached to provide security for Powers Catholic High School. The company initially focused on school safety before branching out to serve other industries including automotive and agriculture. PSS has experienced significant growth and today has over 900 employees across multiple states and pursuing licensures in more.

And given that October is designated as National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM) a time to celebrate the skills and creativity of disabled individuals and remind employers to use inclusive hiring practices – I wanted to share a few thoughts on this issue.
