Mara Technologies is bringing 300 jobs to Grand Blanc Township – here’s why

After searching for a site for its new headquarters, Mara Technologies USA ultimately landed on Grand Blanc Township. According to Jeffrey S. Gary, the company’s vice president of Operations, the decision was driven by three key factors.

“It came down to the region’s talented workforce, supply chain infrastructure, and our customer objectives,” Gary said. “Our new site in Grand Blanc Township delivers on all three.”

News of the project – which will generate a total private investment of $28 million and create 298 jobs – spread earlier this month after the Michigan Strategic Fund approved a $1 million performance-based grant for the company.

The project has also received support from the Flint & Genesee Economic Alliance, which helped Mara Technologies in the incentive and site selection process and will assist the company in finding candidates for the new positions.

“As we often find with these types of projects, a big factor that comes into play is our talent pool,” said Tyler Rossmaessler, executive director of the Economic Alliance, a division of Flint & Genesee Group. “Not only do we have a civilian labor force of more than 170,000, we’re within an hour’s drive of 4 million people. That’s 40 percent of the state’s population and a huge advantage for our employers.”

Hiring has already started for the company, which will manufacture broadband communication amplification hardware starting in March. The products will upgrade communications infrastructure and extend broadband communications to areas where it was previously unavailable.

Mara Technologies USA Inc. is a subsidiary of Markham, Ontario-based Invotek Group Inc., an electronics manufacturer supporting global broadband telecommunication, IOT devices and infrastructure and EV and other power management systems. The company is part of a global organization operating in Asia, Europe, and North America with more than 2,000 associates worldwide.

With the holiday shopping season upon us, the Flint & Genesee Chamber is encouraging shoppers to purchase their gifts from area businesses this year. Not sure where to start? The division recently solicited gift suggestions from its members and used the submissions to create its first-ever “Flint & Genesee Chamber Favorite Things” round-up.

“Flint & Genesee is home to a number of businesses that offer products and services that would make great gifts for family, friends and co-workers,” said Andy Younger, executive director of Flint & Genesee Chamber, a division of Flint & Genesee Group. “By shining a spotlight on some of those businesses, we hope to inspire our community members to shop small and support local this holiday season.”

Q&A: Supporting small businesses with Kiva loans

Since the beginning of the year, seven local businesses have worked with Flint & Genesee Economic Alliance’s Small Business Desk to take advantage of a funding resource called Kiva. Currently, two of those businesses are in the process using the crowdfunding platform – which allows entrepreneurs to raise a zero-percent interest loan – to help take their businesses to the next level.

Jacob and Ashleigh Saldaña have just under three weeks left to meet their $11,500 goal, which will help the husband-and-wife duo purchase equipment and launch an internship program at Sal’s Gym. And Ally Garrett (pictured) is planning to expand her cosmetic business, NaturALLYBeat LLC, once she reaches her $2,000 goal.

To learn more about the Kiva platform, Inside Business recently sat down with Tracy Joseph, business support manager at the Economic Alliance, a division of Flint & Genesee Group, and Shaina Tinsey, assistant program officer at LISC Flint.

FACES of Flint & Genesee Business: Steve Lund, Senderra RX Specialty Pharmacy

Senderra RX Specialty Pharmacy opened in 2010 in Dallas, TX, and was started by Will Howard, Win Purifoy and Tom Bohannan. Soon after the company started, Steve Lund joined the Senderra team, coming from Diplomat Pharmacy where he had worked for six years prior.

At first, he was consulting full-time for the business before he was officially hired in 2013. At that time, the company was looking to expand with a new call center and Lund, being a Flint native, knew just the place.
