LANSING, Mich. – Monday, Governor Gretchen Whitmer announced that major road repair projects updates are expected to begin this week in Midland, Oakland, Saginaw, and Washtenaw Counties. The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) projects include M-30 road resurfacing in Midland County, the next phase of work on the I-96 Flex Route in Oakland County, bridge work on I-675 in Saginaw County, and the next phase of work on resurfacing M-17 between Huron Street and Summit Road in Washtenaw County. These investments are expected to support over 3,700 jobs.

“Across Michigan, we are fixing the damn roads to save drivers time and money. Today’s investments in Midland, Oakland, Saginaw, and Washtenaw counties will support over 3,700 jobs and help drivers go to work, drop their kids off at school, and run errands safely,” said Governor Whitmer. “Since I took office through the end of 2022, we will have invested 70% more in our roads than the previous four years to fix over 16,000 lane miles of road and 1,200 bridges, supporting nearly 89,000 jobs. Both the Rebuilding Michigan Plan and the bipartisan Building Michigan Together Plan are helping us build safe, reliable infrastructure that will make a huge difference for families and business across the state. I hope you all like orange because you’ll be seeing a lot of cones and barrels this summer. I’m proud of what we have accomplished, so let’s keep moving dirt and getting it done."

Northbound I-675 final detour for bridge work in Saginaw starts Monday, June 6

MDOT will complete the final phase of bridge maintenance work on northbound I-675 in Saginaw. This work is part of a $10.5 million investment to improve more than 8 miles of I-675 with concrete pavement repairs and work to address maintenance needs on 36 bridges and culvert structures. Work started in April 2021 and is expected to be complete in June. Based on economic modeling, this investment is expected to support 133 jobs.

M-30 resurfacing in Sanford starts Monday, June 6

MDOT will invest $1.4 million to resurface nearly 5 miles of M-30 (Meridian Road) from M-20 (Isabella Road) to US-10.  Based on economic modeling, this investment is expected to support nearly 20 jobs.

This work will improve the driving surface of M-30, extending the life of the road.

Next phase of work on I-96 Flex Route begins Tuesday, June 7

The I-96 Flex Route project will be moving into the next phase, which will shift part of eastbound I-96 traffic from Kent Lake Road to Wixom Road across the median until late fall. During the traffic shift, there will be two lanes open in each direction on the westbound side of I-96. Based on economic modeling, the I-96 Flex Route project and its $269 million investment is expected to support 3,429 jobs.

Recently, Governor Whitmer signed the Building Michigan Together Plan, a bipartisan plan to invest nearly $5 billion in Michigan’s infrastructure, grow the economy, create jobs, and benefit families in every region of the state. The Building Michigan Together Plan calls for critical investments of $645 million in Michigan’s infrastructure, including $317 million for road and bridge programs, benefitting both state and local projects.
