LANSING, MI – Dawn Opel, JD, PhD, an experienced researcher and food security advocate, recently added general counsel to her services for the Food Bank Council of Michigan. Concurrently, Feeding America appointed her chair of a task force to aid in its development of data initiatives for national anti-hunger and anti-poverty work.

Opel will continue to serve as the director of research and strategic studies for the Food Bank Council in addition to her new role. As general counsel, she facilitates the organization’s legal and ethical pursuit of its mission and objectives. She also proactively manages risk through policy development, education, enforcement and risk assessment.

“Dr. Opel is a proven, effective leader and researcher,” said Gerry Brisson, Food Bank Council Board chair and president and CEO of Gleaners Community Food Bank. “As we seek to increase our reach and impact for food insecure populations – patients, school children and seniors – Dr. Opel’s legal expertise and credentials will help assure food banks that we are protecting their important work, and especially those who are seeking our help, while we take hunger off the table.”

Dr. Opel received her law degree from the University of North Carolina School of Law. She clerked for the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Middle District of North Carolina. She also has a doctorate in rhetoric, composition and linguistics from Arizona State University and a bachelor’s degree in history from Wake Forest University. Dr. Opel is an inactive member of the North Carolina State Bar and is a member of the State Bar of Michigan.

“I am delighted to bring my legal training to the Food Bank Council of Michigan and to serve as its general counsel,” said Dr. Opel. “As we continue to grow and innovate in furtherance of building a food secure Michigan, I am committed to ensuring our excellence in all aspects of the association.”

In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic and the resulting demand on the U.S. food bank network, Feeding America appointed Dr. Opel as chair of its Contract Task Force Subcommittee on Data Analysis and Sharing. The subcommittee will analyze current data collection and analysis across the Feeding America network and make recommendations on best practices to inform national anti-hunger and anti-poverty initiatives.
