Dave is President of DRH Enterprises, LLC, Grass Lake, MI, and a Crestcom training facilitator in Michigan. His sessions are currently held virtually during COVID-19 and he can train businesses statewide across Michigan.

This month Dave is discussing a module - Accountability.

Personal accountability seems to be on the decline around the world.  Just listen to the evening news or read social media for a few minutes, and you can pretty quickly see rocks flying through the air in a world filled with glass houses.  But outside of the highly visible world of broadcast television and social media, you can still find people who believe that their future, their success or failure, their happiness, and the impact they make is within their control.
 
Accountability is a willingness to take ownership for outcomes arising from your own attitudes, behaviors, and consequent choice of actions.
 
There are three pillars of performance - Accountability - taking ownership for your job or role.  Responsibility - accept the tasks, details and particulars given to you, where they are part of your function or otherwise assigned.  Empowerment - Believing that you are enabled to fulfill your responsibilities, that you have the training and skills to execute on your plan, and that you have access to adequate resources.
 
If these three conditions are in place, then building a culture of accountability is possible.  You’ll notice that with accountability, responsibility and empowerment - the ownership pretty clearly falls to the employee, with the boss in more of a coaching/supporting mode.  Micromanagement is an impediment to creating an accountable culture.
 
There is a terrific framework that we discuss in our Crestcom session called the Eight Rungs of Accountability.  The bottom 4 rungs are Victim Behaviors - statements that we all make when we are not being accountable.  The top four rungs are Accountable Behaviors - and the closer to the top rung, the more accountable your behaviors.  If we could all operate at rung 8 all day, every day, we’d be perfectly accountable for everything that goes on in our lives.  That’s not realistic - but we can all improve the amount of time we spend there.
