If you want someone to maintain the status quo - to keep things running smoothly - or to not mess things up, then you’re probably looking for a manager. Someone who can handle the day to day activities and make sure things run like clockwork.
However, if you’re looking to grow your organization, to innovate, to “move the needle” and improve performance, then you’re looking for a leader. A leader’s job is to produce change. And as we all know, nobody particularly likes change. We like consistency, we like reliability, and we like repeatability - these are all hallmarks of the human condition, because high predictability leads to safety - the first of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. You’ve probably seen the comic strip - change is a good thing - you go first.
As if figuring out what to change and how to change it isn’t hard enough, we then have to convince those we work with to leave the safety of the familiar for the fearful unknown. Being good at implementing change in an organization requires a combination of skills sets which include empathetic listening, tailored communication, repetition, and recognition.
