What the Women in Technology peer group is?

It’s a group of women in the greater Lansing area who work in IT or OT-related fields, meeting through the Capital Area IT Council. The Capital Area IT Council really values how strong our peer-to-peer network is, and the Women in Technology peer group is one example of how we implement that network. Our peer group also has active participation from our allies including men and those working in non-IT fields, such as HR and talent management.

What value the WIT group adds to businesses?

The events WIT hosts provide professional development opportunities for members to learn from industry experts and others in our community. They’re able to take insights and expertise from our different speakers back to their companies. Sometimes, this is a lesson learned or a name of a vendor or partnership to pursue or an idea such as a women’s empowerment group that can be added to an office. They are teaching each other about all aspects of being a working professional and how we can bring that to our careers while still balancing life outside of work. If a business is interested in joining the CAITC or in our peer group specifically, they can contact our executive director, Jordan Davis, at (517) 492-5592 or email caitc@camw.net.

How being a part of the Women in Technology peer group benefit its members?

A significant part of what the council values providing is networking, and that carries into its peer groups. The group provides opportunities for us to network with other women in tech fields, which helps us with career growth. Everyone can hear stories from others and how they handled situations and circumstances that are similar to ones they may be going through and hear how others started to take ownership of their careers. It’s so important to lift other women up and continue to support each other. According to Women Who Tech, only 25% of IT jobs are held by women. Other statistics show there has been a huge increase in women who choose STEM majors in college over the past 25 years. As more and more women join tech fields, it’s crucial to have spaces that prioritize mentorship and growth. This community is very motivational and inspiring. It creates a sense of belonging. Members can work on goals in a safe environment and get advice and opportunities to pursue those goals. For example, if I have a goal of becoming a better public speaker, WIT offers me chances to practice.

About the upcoming event WIT is hosting:

WIT is hosting a mini conference in partnership with LCC on Monday, April 20, at LCC’s West Campus. It will focus around IT, career development and STEAM careers. The event will include networking opportunities, keynote speakers and sessions specific to IT and STEAM. The hope is this conference will not only provide professional development for the attendees, but it will also be a space for recruiting and connecting local professionals and students with employers, educational institutions, vendors and allies. All members of the Capital Area IT Council are welcome to attend, and if you aren’t a part of the council but are interested in attending, you can reach out to us on our Facebook page for more information. Registration is limited, but we’re hoping to have some spots open to the public!
