Bipartisan investments expand child care to 150,000 more kids and their families, lowering costs and helping parents get back to work, state launches new tool to help families determine their eligibility    

LANSING, Mich. – Tuesday, Governor Whitmer celebrated the bipartisan expansion of access to free or low-cost child care for 150,000 more Michigan kids and their families over the past year. Families with two kids earning up to $55,500 may qualify for help paying for child care. The state also launched a new tool to help Michiganders easily identify their eligibility for child care benefits.

In 2022, Gov. Whitmer is making the largest investment in state roads and bridges in Michigan’s history    

LANSING, Mich. -- Monday, Governor Gretchen Whitmer announced five road projects slated to begin this week in Berrien, Clare, Ingham, Kent, and Van Buren counties. The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) projects include I-94 bridge demolition over Pipestone Road in Berrien County Bridge, work on southbound M-37 in Kent County, maintenance on US-127 ramps at Kipp Road in Ingham County, and I-196 ramp repaving in Van Buren County. Based on economic modeling, these investments will support 908 jobs.

Matching its Pre-Pandemic Low Point

Initial claims for unemployment insurance rose by 14,000 to 262,000 in the week ending August 6 from a downward revised 248,000 in the week ending July 30. The four-week moving average of initial claims, which smooths out some of the volatility, moved up 5,000 to 252,000 in the week ending August 6 from a downward revised 247,000 in the previous week. It hit a low of 172K in early April. The insured unemployment rate held steady at a very low 1.0 percent in the week ending July 30.
