The Michigan state average is up 1 cent compared to last week

DEARBORN, Mich., (December 23, 2019) - Gas prices in Michigan are up 1 cent compared to a week ago. Michigan drivers are now paying an average of $2.49 per gallon for regular unleaded. This price is 5 cents less than this time last month and 33 cents more than this time last year.

Motorists are paying an average of $37 for a full 15-gallon tank of gasoline; a discount of $10 from when prices were their highest last May.

Pump prices savings are coming to Michigan this month and into next year. AAA forecasts gas prices to edge cheaper by as much as a dime throughout the Great Lakes and Central region, but warns motorists to expect price fluctuation – potentially large swings – from week-to-week.

Volatility at the pump will be linked to fluctuation in the Great Lakes and Central states region’s gasoline stock levels and regional refinery rates. Since October, stocks have been on a roller coaster ride of builds and draws. Stock levels hit as high as 51 million bbls to as low as 46.4 million bbl. However, stocks have been building since Thanksgiving. Regional refinery rates have been mostly increasing since October. Should this continue and stock levels remain consistent or increase, gas prices will see less fluctuation at the pump.

“Gas prices in the coming weeks are expected to be cheaper, which – with the holidays upon us – is good news for motorists,” said Adrienne Woodland, spokesperson, AAA-The Auto Club Group. “While people in most states are paying more to fill-up year-over-year, there are some strong savings when comparing the 2018 to 2019 overall average. This year’s Michigan average is about 12 cents cheaper than last year.”

Compared to last week, Metro Detroit’s average daily gas price decreased slightly. Metro Detroit’s current average is $2.53 per gallon, about 1 cent less than last week’s average and about 35 cents more than this same time last year.
