The Michigan state average is still down 36 cents compared to last year

DEARBORN, Mich., (December 21, 2020) - Gas prices in Michigan are up 13 cents compared to last week.  Michigan drivers are now paying an average price of $2.14 per gallon for regular unleaded. This price is 13 cents more than this time last month but still 36 cents less than this time last year.

Motorists are paying an average of $32 for a full 15-gallon tank of gasoline; a discount of $12 from when prices were their highest last July.

In the new weekly report from the Energy Information Administration, gas demand increased by 375,000 b/d to 7.98 million b/d last week and supplies tightened amid lower refinery utilization. After decreasing for four weeks, the increase in gas demand has helped to push pump prices up across the country.

At the close of Thursday’s formal trading session, WTI increased by 54 cents to settle at $48.36 — about two dollars more than the price at the end of last week. Crude prices rose due to a weak dollar and increasing investment based on market optimism that coronavirus vaccines will help crude oil demand recover in 2021. Higher crude prices have also helped to lift pump prices, since the price of oil makes up over half of the cost of gasoline. Continued positive news about the vaccines will continue helping the domestic price of crude rise.

"The increase in the Michigan state average is likely temporary as the country enters the winter driving season — a time when gas demand typically hits the lowest levels for the year," said Adrienne Woodland, spokesperson, AAA - The Auto Club Group.

Compared to last week, Metro Detroit’s average daily gas price increased. Metro Detroit’s current average is $2.13 per gallon, 10 cents more than last week’s average but still 40 cents less than this time last year.
