The Michigan state average is trending downward after a spike in prices following Hurricane Ida

DEARBORN, Mich., (September 7, 2021) - Gas prices in Michigan increased 8 cents from last week. Michigan drivers are now paying an average of $3.21  per gallon for regular unleaded. This price is 10 cents less than this time last month but still $1.11 more than this time last year.

Motorists are paying an average of $48 for a full 15-gallon tank of gasoline; an increase of about $9 from when prices were their highest last January.

Hurricane Ida took 13 percent of U.S. refining capacity offline. Those refineries are assessing building infrastructure and damage. While no re-start dates have been announced, AAA anticipates operations beginning within the next 3 weeks. Constrained stock levels and high crude prices, which have climbed as 96 percent of oil production in the Gulf Coast region was shuttered last week, kept pump prices elevated heading into the holiday weekend. The average price of gas in Michigan has slowly declined after prices jumped to $3.22 last Thursday.

“The impact of Hurricane Ida caused a sharp spike in gas prices last week ahead of Labor Day weekend,” said Adrienne Woodland, spokesperson, AAA-The Auto Club Group. “The Michigan state average is beginning to trend downward, so drivers could possibly see some stability at the pump this week.”

Compared to last week, Metro Detroit’s average daily gas price held steady. Metro Detroit’s current average is $3.27 per gallon, the same as last week’s average and $1.09 more than this same time last year.

Every day up to 130,000 stations in the nation and more than 4,200 stations in Michigan are surveyed based on credit card swipes and direct feeds in cooperation with the Oil Price Information Service (OPIS) and Wright Express for unmatched statistical reliability. All average retail prices in this report are for a gallon of regular, unleaded gasoline.
