The Michigan state average is 5 cents less than last week

DEARBORN, Mich., (January 4, 2021) - Gas prices in Michigan are down 5 cents compared to a week ago. Michigan drivers are now paying an average of $2.22 per gallon for regular unleaded. This price is 16 cents more than this time last month but still 33 cents less than this time last year.

Motorists are paying an average of $33 for a full 15-gallon tank of gasoline; a discount of $11 from when prices were their highest July of 2019.

Last week, the Energy Information Administration measured weekly gasoline demand at 8 million b/d, up from the previous week, while gasoline stocks decreased about one million bbl down to 237.7 bbl. Typically, this combination would result in cheaper gas prices, but with crude oil pricing at the highest levels since last February, that is not the case.

“December saw the second largest pump price jump of 2020, ending with the Michigan state average 25 cents higher than it began,” said Adrienne Woodland, spokesperson, AAA-The Auto Club Group. “Despite low demand, pump prices are holding steady due to solid crude oil gains.”

Compared to last week, Metro Detroit’s average daily gas price decreased slightly. Metro Detroit’s current average is $2.22 per gallon, about 2 cents less than last week’s average and 36 cents less than this same time last year.
