The Michigan state average is down 2 cents compared to last week
DEARBORN, Mich., (July 12, 2021) - Gas prices in Michigan dropped 2 cents compared to last week. Michigan drivers are now paying an average of $3.18 per gallon for regular unleaded. This price is 2 cents more than this time last month and 92 cents more than this time last year.
Motorists are paying an average of $48 for a full 15-gallon tank of gasoline; an increase of about $9 from when prices were their highest last January.
In its latest weekly report, new data from the Energy Information Administration (EIA) showed gas demand jumped from 9.17 million b/d to 10.04 million b/d. The estimated rate, which will likely be revised in a few months after verified data is available, is the highest weekly gas demand estimate released by EIA since 1991 and only reflects one day of the Independence Day holiday weekend. Higher demand and a 6.1 million bbl decline in total gas stocks have pushed the national average higher.
At the close of Thursday’s formal trading session, WTI increased by 74 cents to settle at $72.94. Crude prices declined earlier in the week due to a stronger dollar and market concerns about excess crude supply. However, prices reversed course following the release of EIA’s report that showed total domestic crude inventories decreased by 6.9 million bbl to 445.5 million bbl last week.
“If these trends continue, while the price of crude remains above $70 per barrel, drivers can expect gas prices to continue climbing during the busy summer driving season,” said Adrienne Woodland, spokesperson, AAA-The Auto Club Group.
Compared to last week, Metro Detroit’s average daily gas price increased slightly. Metro Detroit’s current average is $3.29 per gallon. This price is 1 cent more than last week’s average and $1 more than this same time last year.
