National Organization Serving Burn Survivors Announces Senior Director

Phoenix Society for Burn Survivors, a national organization headquartered in Grand Rapids, hires Debra Minton after successful $6 million capital campaign

Deb Minton, incoming Senior Director of Philanthropy and Strategic Initiatives, Phoenix Society, Grand Rapids, MI, spoke with Jeffrey Mosher about her new role. 

She will officially start January 3, 2019, Minton has served as a philanthropic consultant to Phoenix Society through her firm, Philanthropia Partners, since 2015, most notably leading the "Never Alone Campaign," which raised over $6 million to support a variety of organization initiatives. This is a large transition for Minton, as she will be closing Philanthropia Partners, which she founded in 2000.

Delta Dental’s ‘Smile Safari’ float takes Detroiters into wild world of oral health 

Okemos, Michigan— Delta Dental of Michigan’s first appearance in America’s Thanksgiving Parade brought the enamel animal preserve to downtown Detroit, complete with larger than life teeth, toothbrushes and a 25-foot polar bear.

The company’s 100-foot float, titled Delta Dental’s Smile Safari, is designed with oral health and literacy in mind, urging children and families to brush for a healthy mouth and read for a healthy mind.

The segment features many student voices sharing thoughts on a unique trip that not only introduced them to artwork from 17 artists from around the world but also to the historical locations such as the Michigan Theater (open in 1930) and the 1906 Masonic Temple, home to the new Jackson School of Arts Project. The Michigan Theater which has received the Michigan Historical Preservation Award for its restoration efforts. The restoration work is well underway for the Jackson School of Arts which is scheduled to open next fall.

DPSCD Announces Hydration Stations: Long-term Drinking Water Solution for All Schools with Philanthropic Support

District to begin implementation immediately with completion by summer 2019

DETROIT – (Oct. 9, 2018) The Detroit Public Schools Community District (DPSCD) announced today its long-term solution to provide clean drinking water for the more than 50,000 students and staff throughout the District with the installation of water hydration systems. In addition, the District announced support from approximately a dozen philanthropic partners who have committed $2.4 million to support the purchase and installation of the hydration systems to be placed in every school building by summer of 2019. DPSCD will be one of the nation’s largest public school districts with hydration stations in all school buildings. The hydration stations offer filtration technology designed to cool water and remove lead, copper and other contaminants. The District will install one station for every 100 students as well as one in every gym and faculty lounge.
