TechnologyItalian biotech startup MHOX has an ambitious vision: improve human eyes by making synthetic replacements. The synthetic eyes would be made with a 3D bioprinter, which uses special needles to “print” different types of cells into a 3D organic structure. Bioprinters can already make organs such as ears, blood vessels, and kidneys, but the complexity of making eyes has so far daunted researchers. The company hopes to offer variations that would heal damaged eyesight, enhance vision, and advance eyesight into the digital realm.
