Chris Holman talks with Edythe Hatter-Williams, CEO of the Capital Area Michigan Works! about the T3 Business Council which stands for teach, talent, and thrive.

Throughout the last few years, there has been a lot of talk about the need for a more robust plan for education and college- and career-readiness in the tri-county region. This call for greater preparedness has been answered by a coalition of Mid-Michigan businesses and community partners who have banded together to turn this plan into action.

It's called the Teach. Talent. Thrive. (T3) Business Council, CEO’s representing private sector employers in health care, advanced manufacturing, insurance, emerging technologies and other industries will lead the regions workforce development effort. With support from K-12 higher education, government and nonprofits, the goal is to position Greater Lansing as the exemplary STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics) region in the U.S.

The number of STEAM jobs in the U.S. will continue to grow over the next few years. By 2020, jobs in STEAM will grow by 14 percent. To build and implement an action plan, the T3 Business Council will use metrics to power the plan. Education is a vital component to establishing Greater Lansing as the exemplary STEAM region, and T3 will support pre-K-12 career exploration and will invest in lifelong learning to support learners.

In addition to traditional pre-K-12 education, T3 will promote nontraditional learning, which includes apprenticeships, internships, mentoring, job shadows, competency-based instruction and hands-on experiences to support student exploration in and out of the classroom. Another piece of the puzzle is increasing community awareness of job and education opportunities in STEAM.
